Tree stumps, large blocks of marble and limestone – the materials of a petite woman who hewed her artistic vision directly into the material. In the 1930s, Barbara Hepworth was an exceptional figure in the male-dominated world of sculpture. Today, her elegant, organic abstractions have made her one of the most important and pioneering sculptors of her time, whose work continues to inspire a younger generation of artists.
