Anish Kapoor.
Winner of the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize of the City of Duisburg
and the Rhineland Regional Council

24 April to 30 August 2026

Anish Kapoor (born 1954, Mumbai) is one of the most visionary artists of our time. The Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize, awarded by the City of Duisburg and the Rhineland Regional Council, now honors his groundbreaking life's work, which continues to shape the development of art to this day.

To mark this occasion, the Lehmbruck Museum is presenting the most comprehensive exhibition of Kapoor's works in Germany in over a decade. It shows the artist and his work in all its aspects: from early pigment works and fascinating mirror sculptures to monumental installations that connect body, space, and consciousness. Kapoor works with forms, colors, and materials that challenge us sensually and intellectually. They lead us to the question: How can we represent what is intangible, invisible, what constitutes the core of human beings?

Anish Kapoor has created an exhibition for the Lehmbruck Museum that harmonizes the impact of his works with the characteristics of this iconic modernist building. The exhibition focuses on themes that have moved us for centuries: Where do we come from and where are we going? It is about identity, memory, vulnerability, and infinity.

Anish Kapoor's sculptures are not purely static objects, but immersive spaces of experience that touch, amaze, and transform us. The exhibition is a rare opportunity to experience Kapoor's work in all its emotional and philosophical depth. It invites us to open ourselves to intense sensory impressions and to believe that the impossible is possible.

The architecture of the museum becomes a resonance chamber for Kapoor's ideas: light and shadow, space and material change our perception of the world and expand our imagination. As we walk through the exhibition, we encounter works that are like thresholds to other dimensions—mysterious and immediately present.

The exhibition is supported by the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR), by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, by duisport - Duisburger Hafen AG, by the Sparkasse Duisburg, by the Sparkassen Kulturstiftung Rheinland and by the City of Duisburg.

Monopol Magazin für Kunst und Leben is the media partner for the exhibition.
