Sculpture 21st: Mona Hatoum

26 May to 20 August 2023

The human body and its senses are at the centre of Mona Hatoum’s work. She first became known internationally in the mid-1980s for her performance and video works. Today she is amongst the best-known contemporary artists. Hatoum was born in Lebanon in 1952 to Palestinian parents. She creates sculptures and installations whose visual beauty and perfection attract and repulse in equal measure. The expansive work “Map (clear)” (2023) covers the entire floor area of the northern glass hall of the museum: Thousands of clear glass marbles form a fascinating yet disquieting map of the world that reflects on the extreme vulnerability of our environment.
